Like many people in our city, Jim Saunders gives for a variety of reasons. Some reasons are personal, others stem from his desire to help people in our community. “Growing up, my parents gave me every opportunity imaginable, which really helped shape my future. They also taught me the value of giving back,” says Jim.
Today, as Director and President of Twin Butte Energy Ltd., Jim continues to support Calgary’s communities and says taking the opportunity to give back is more than a motto; it’s a way of life. “The whole idea of being fortunate is being able to give back,” he explains.
Jim began donating to United Way of Calgary and Area through his workplace over 11 years ago. Today, his involvement with United Way goes far beyond the workplace – he and his wife also generously donate their time and money: “We believe in the community in which we live, and it’s important to us that we contribute and do our part to make a difference.”
“If the city’s been good to you, you owe it to give a little bit back.”
Jim further explains that he gives back to his community not simply because he can, but because he sees that there is a need. “The needs are here. Whether it’s homelessness or early childhood education, there is significant need in our city.”
A pivotal moment took place for Jim while he was shopping for clothing to donate and deliver to a United Way funded program; the program provides women with the chance to move from crisis into a safe, supportive environment where they can rebuild their lives.
“Our cash attendant asked what we were doing with all the items, so I told her that they were being donated to YWCA’s Mary Dover House,” recalls Jim. She was silent for a moment, then came around the counter, hugged Jim and said “Thank you. I was once a participant there.” Jim says the experience really opened his eyes. “That, right there, is impact.”
It was then that Jim fully realized that by supporting United Way he was helping give people the chance for a better life. “Giving others the possibility to better themselves is where change starts. Few places have the reach, connections and tools to help those less fortunate in our city over the long-term, but United Way does. United Way is one of those places where great things can happen − directions can be set, goals established and successes measured,” he shares.
“The longer I am involved with United Way, the more I see what a great organization it is,” Jim says. “Sometimes, after doing something for so long, you don’t stop to think about why you do it anymore − it just becomes part of who you are.”
