Annual Spirits of Gold Awards
This annual awards and recognition gala celebrates the spirit and generosity of the people, organizations, agencies and workplaces that displayed outstanding leadership and dedication during our annual campaign.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE - Under 500 EMPLOYEES / Over 500 EMPLOYEES
This award recognizes candidates in the over 500 employee category that have demonstrated outstanding and innovative campaigns with 40% average participation over 3 years, and candidates in the under 500 employee category that have demonstrated outstanding and innovative campaigns with 50% average participation over 3 years. They have an active Leadership Giving program and a commitment to making Calgary a great city for everyone. One award will be given to organizations with over 500 employees and one to organizations with under 500 employees.
GEN NEXT AWARD
This award recognizes organizations that have engaged the next generation (20 and 30 year olds) in their campaign through specific events, educational activities and on their Campaign Committee.
This award celebrates noteworthy campaigns that demonstrate industry excellence. Appreciating the diversity in size and scope of our 900 workplace supporters, the winning organization may have exhibited strong management support, a significant increase in Leadership giving and total donations, a surge in employee involvement and has taken a fresh and innovative approach to their United Way campaign. All candidates embody United Way’s philosophy of making Calgary a great city for everyone.
WELCOME TO UNITED WAY
This award recognizes organizations that are supporting United Way for the first time. To be eligible, the organization must not have conducted an employee campaign at any time within the past five years. Eligible candidates demonstrate a commitment to the community by empowering their employees or the community to give, volunteer, and act.
POWER OF ONE
This award recognizes a United Way Campaign Volunteer who has exceeded expectations and created a greater awareness of United Way in the community and workplace through their personal involvement and initiative.
CORE TO THE COMMUNITY
This award recognizes organizations and employees who have demonstrated outstanding support of the Core Giving Program. Core donors are those who give up to $1,199 per year. The nominated organizations have demonstrated excellent use of the Core Giving materials, have high participation and engagement rates, and have shown an increase in their Core donor base and Core dollars raised over the previous year.
LEADING THE WAY
This award recognizes organizations and employees who have demonstrated outstanding support of the Leadership Giving program. Leaders are those individuals who give $1,200 to $9,999 on an annual basis. Candidates have shown a significant increase in Leadership donors and dollars over the previous year.
SPIRIT OF INNOVATION
This award recognizes companies or groups that have taken a unique, innovative, and refreshed approach to fundraising for United Way. Companies nominated in this category have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to United Way by engaging their employees and the community in an exciting way.
QUANTUM LEAP - Under 500 EMPLOYEES / Over 500 EMPLOYEES
This award recognizes organizations and their employees who have achieved significant growth in the current year over the previous year, including an increase in funds raised and an increase of donors. Candidates also demonstrated significant management support. One award will be given to organizations with over 500 employees and one to organizations with under 500 employees.
SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERISM
This award recognizes organizations and their employees who have demonstrated outstanding support for employee volunteerism. Examples include United Way Day of Caring® projects (year-round), inviting United Way speakers to events, hosting or attending an Immersive Experience, having a strong campaign planning committee and/or ambassador group, and utilizing engagement activities which all demonstrate strong volunteer spirit with the work of United Way in the community.
AGENCY SOCIAL INNOVATION
This award recognizes an initiative or agency that has implemented a socially innovative idea which led to a community or organizational change. Eligible candidates will demonstrate extraordinary inventiveness of a solution and how it breaks from traditional approaches, clearly defined metrics and a measurable record of improvement, and a plan for promoting and continuing innovation.
GEORGE BLONDEAU ABORIGINAL SUPPORT and AWARENESS BUILDER
This award recognizes agencies and their employees who exemplify a commitment to support the Aboriginal community and build awareness to both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community through their services. Eligible candidates will demonstrate an internal policy to actively include Aboriginal peoples; implement inclusion and consultation practices of Aboriginal peoples in service design, cultural practices, and governance; and include knowledge and awareness of the topic of intergenerational trauma.
TOGETHER WE CAN
This award recognizes a collaborative initiative which has developed significant partnerships with community agencies, community groups, government, businesses and/or citizens to address and alleviate complex social problems that can’t be solved by one sector or organization alone in order to achieve large-scale, lasting social change. Eligible candidates will identify a community gap in collaboration; collaborate with others toward influencing systems and policy change; develop collaborative approaches that strengthen the network and capacity of non-profits; and achieve outcomes that would not be possible alone.
This award recognizes agencies and their employees who exemplify a commitment to making their services open and accessible to the diverse citizens in our community. To be eligible, five areas will be assessed including: leadership - raising awareness of equality, diversity, and inclusion issues; a dedicated approach to increasing diversity and inclusion, specific engagement strategies to encourage employee, community, and stakeholder engagement; integration of diverse populations in service design; and a demonstrable impact on the creation of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
INDIVIDUAL AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
This award recognizes a United Way Campaign/ Cabinet Volunteer who has exceeded expectations and given their time to create greater awareness of United Way within their industry.
The President’s Award is awarded annually at Spirits of Gold and can be awarded to individuals, corporate partners or other groups and is our most prestigious award. It is at the sole discretion of the President with insight provided by staff. Recipients are not eligible if they have won the award in the past 5 years.
