LISTENING TO YOUTH GAVE US INSIGHTS INTO THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE
Over the winter and spring, conversations were held with 49 youth who ranged in age from sixteen to their
early twenties. Although the youth came from diverse backgrounds and had very different life experiences,
several things became very clear:
It takes a tremendous amount of courage and commitment to come back to school
• Many have not experienced success in school for many years
• While these youth may be looking to make a change and get back into the school system, they lack the
natural supports and the help of sustained resources to make any lasting change in their lives
THREE CENTRES HAVE BEEN SET UP TO OFFER 150 KIDS COMPLIMENTARY
TUTORING IN MATH
The Renert Centre and YMCA Calgary have joined together to provide math tutoring to 150 youth who do
not have the resources. 50 tutors have been recruited and have been trained by The Renert Centre. They
will now be deployed to three YMCA locations for this after school program.
The Renert Centre is also piloting a new initiative called Bright Futures. In partnership with Burns Memorial
Fund, scholarships are now available to cover partial or full costs of attending Renert Centre’s private
tutoring programs.
