Family Connectors
Family Connectors in the CLVC work directly
with families in the Greater Forest Lawn area
to provide them with information and connect
them to resources and services so that they
are better able to meet their basic needs.
School staff refer many families, but families
can also access help from Family Connectors
directly. The Family Connectors advocate
for families and also help them to complete
difficult forms and speak to service providers.
Often the Family Connectors help families
with links, referrals and assistance regarding:
Financial concerns
Housing assistance
Emergency food resources
Clothing and furniture
Counselling referrals
Childcare options
Health and dental care assistance
Education opportunities
Employment resources
Tutoring services
Parenting support services
After school programs
Newcomer services
Special activities promote family
togetherness and community connections
Many of the families served by the CLVC have
limited opportunities to experience recreation
or leisure activities with others, so with help
from the CLVC team, the Family Connectors
organized two summer events. One field trip
took 20 families to the Royal Tyrrell Museum
in Drumheller, Alberta. It was not only a fun
family excursion outside the city, but also a
social and learning opportunity for parents
and their children.
The second event was a back-to-school
picnic that attracted 50 area residents and
included games, races, a book exchange
and craft activities. Alberta Health Services
provided information about healthy school
lunches and families enjoyed a story time and
could sign-up on-site for library cards from
Calgary Public Library.
Over the summer, the CLVC Family
Connectors also volunteered at the Calgary
Family Services Family Camp and Camp
Kiwanis. They helped 14 families attend,
and for 10 of the families it was their first
family camp experience. Everyone enjoyed
the outdoor activities and families also had
an opportunity to meet others from their
