COMPLEXPROBLEMS&CHANGELAB
Change Labs buildour capacity to stay in thequestion. That is,
tobecome comfortablewith ambiguity and stay inour inquiry,
so as not to jump to ‘weak solutions’. Thequality of our solutions
depends on thequality of our inquiry.
What is aComplex Problem?
Complex Problems/Challenges have three aspects to them:
Dynamic Complexity
–what happens inoneplace has an
effect somewhere else (things change in time and space)
Social Complexity
– howwe see theworld, what webelieve
andour experiences as complex humanbeings
GenerativeComplexity
– newproblemswe haven’t faced
before, wedon’t havegood examples of howwe’vedealt
with things before (“we need to learn toplay newmusic”)
Howdowework onproblems that have these three types
of complexity? Three responses…
1.
Systemic Response
– the feedback loops in the system
2.
ParticipativeResponse
– buildingparticipative
processes
3.
CreativeResponse
– doing things that have never been
donebefore (newways, new actors)
TheChange Lab is a collective endeavour towork in a
systemic, participative and creativeway.Oneof thepre-
conditions for a successful Change Lab is having the right
team. It is not about ‘representation’ – if youdon’t have the
rightmix, then creative/systemic responseswon’t work.
