Leadership change in 2017

On April 26, United Way’s President and CEO Dr. Lucy Miller announced she will be retiring at the end of 2016. United Way’s Board also announced they have chosen to appoint Karen Young, our current Vice President and COO, as United Way’s new CEO, effective January 1, 2017.

Lucy has served as United Way’s President for over four years. Under her leadership, she has led United Way to a new level of organizational excellence, team ownership of social issues and driven our communities to embrace their power to do good.

Karen and Lucy have been working in partnership for the past two years. They have been an outstanding duo that has brought their strategic approach to shared leadership within United Way. Karen has brought her wonderful combination of focus, authenticity and vision to her role. She has been embraced by staff and has built wonderful relationships in the community.

Karen came to United Way from The City of Calgary where she served for 26 years as an award-winning visionary leader. Her expertise in change management, strategic planning and policy, partnership and community relations, program development and funding as well as her gift for building relationships will ensure that Lucy’s legacy and her work with the community will continue.
