The Genesis Centre of Community Wellness is opening its doors to the public with a weekend of celebrations on January 14 - 15, 2012. The official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on January 14 at 11 a.m. by Mayor Naheed Nenshi. Various activities and cultural events will be happening during the rest of the two days.
The centre, a 225,000 square foot $120 million multi-purpose complex, is not only a venue for sport and recreation, but a place that caters to the diverse interests of the communities in Northeast Calgary. Operated by the North East Centre of Community Society (NECCS), the dynamic centre will house a YMCA, a branch of the Calgary Public Library, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, community gathering places and a human (social) services centre called 1,000 Voices.
United Way of Calgary and Area was involved in the development of the Community and Human Services Area under the NECCS. This area, as stated above, will now be called 1000 Voices, A Community Place at the Genesis Centre. It will be a site where residents can access need services and where they can host their own community enhancement activities.
