WHAT WE DO

High River


 

The High River Partnership’s funding focus is support for stressed families, youth at risk, affordable housing, and seniors.

A High River School approached the Foothills Community Immigrant Services (FCIS) with concerns regarding a particular family that they were having trouble communicating with. The teacher was worried about the hygiene of one of her students and was watching this issue develop into a potential bullying problem. School staff discussed whether social services should be called and if this was in fact a case of neglect. FCIS provided an interpreter for the family and a meeting between the parents and the school was arranged. Through the interpreter the family was informed of the issue and the school found out that this was not a case of neglect. Family needs were identified and addressed at this meeting and lead to productive solutions. The family and the school now both contact FCIS whenever there is an issue. The family has been able to avoid social services involvement and has been the beneficiary of other community supports including a Christmas Hamper with toys for all nine children in the household.
