Shell Immigrant Employment

United Way of Calgary and Area and Shell have partnered to help new immigrants to Calgary find meaningful employment. The Shell Immigrant Employment Project launched in 2007 with a $1.8 million community investment from Shell.  This project works to eliminate the barriers immigrants face in finding meaningful employment and brings employers and skilled immigrants together.

The Shell Immigrant Employment Project is supporting a number of initiatives that bring the immigrant talent pool and the need for a highly skilled labour force together. If you’re interested in getting involved, here are some of the ways you can participate:


Become a mentor in the Calgary Regional Immigrant Employment Council’s (CRIEC) mentoring program:

  • CRIEC brings skilled immigrants and established professionals together to create occupation-specific relationships.
  • The program addresses the workforce reality that Canada is facing a shrinking Canadian-born labour force.
  • The program could be integrated into your organization’s leadership development strategy, which will help create cultural awareness across the organization.
  • Mentoring will help your employees build their leadership and coaching skills, as well as gain valuable cross-cultural insight in a real life setting.
  • Mentors commit to 24 hours over a four-month period.

Take part in “Networking for Success” events:

  • This event is a monthly gathering of Calgary employers and internationally trained professionals.

  • The goal is to provide an opportunity for foreign-trained professionals to meet with Calgary employers in their professional field and enhance their knowledge about the Canadian workplace.
  • For employers, the event is an opportunity to meet with internationally trained professionals who can provide valuable skills and expertise for their organization.
  • The event is hosted by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society and The Calgary Chamber of Commerce.
