What are the advantages of giving a Gift of Securities?

  • It is the most tax-effective way to donate to charity with the capital gains tax rate now at ZERO per cent for the donation of most securities. In the case of gifts other than flow through shares, you will receive a tax receipt for the full appreciated value of the donation without incurring any capital gains tax! However, the federal budget effective for 2011 modified the rules regarding the inclusion of capital gains on donation of flow through shares. Please obtain appropriate financial advice when considering donation of shares.
