What is the Urban Exposure Project?
The Urban Exposure Project (UEP) provides participants with an opportunity to engage in a pressing social issue in their community like none other. Hosted by United Way of Calgary and Area and facilitated by United Way’s BeCause initiative, the program is aimed at young professionals with a passion to learn and make a difference in the community!
The 2010 UEP provided participants with the opportunity to explore the issue of “Poverty” and in 2011 exploring “Community” using their camera as a tool to express their learnings and communicate their stories and experiences in a visual way. Their photos were successfully exhibited at the Wallace Galleries in Calgary in June.
We’re pleased to be offering the opportunity again in 2012 and look forward to recruiting for next year in the coming few months. Our topic this year will be looking at social issues and structures of Family as it pertains to community.
What does it involve to be a Participant?
We ask a lot of our UEP participants, and in exchange we give a lot back. Participants are asked to give their time for regular bi‐weekly sessions, are provided with the opportunity to go out into the community and work first hand with agencies and organizations dealing with poverty in our community. They will spend time independently exploring the issue and photographing their learnings.
Being a participant means challenging yourself to explore both the hopeful and the saddening aspects of a social issue, pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, and making a meaningful effort to educate yourself and your social network. Our vision is A Calgary transformed by inspired and mobilized 20 to 40 year olds and their peers – we want you to join us.
How do I Apply to be a Participant?
In order to ensure that we have an appropriate balance of committed and available participants, we will be asking all applicants to complete an application form. Click here to download the application form.
