Dr. Lucy Miller, President & CEO

United Way of Calgary and Area is very pleased to welcome Dr. Lucy Miller as its new President and CEO.

In addition to her extensive experience within both the public and private sectors, Dr. Miller has an established academic background. She obtained both her B.A. and B.Ed. from St. Francis Xavier University and her M.A. Ed. from Dalhousie University. After working as both a teacher and principal within the Halifax/Bedford School District, she went on to obtain her Doctorate of Education from the University of Toronto while simultaneously serving as Superintendent for Ottawa Catholic School District.

Dr. Miller has worked as a teacher, principal, curriculum consultant and superintendent in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Alberta.

She has served as part-time professor at both Queen’s University and the University of Ottawa. No stranger to multi-tasking, Dr. Miller is also the author of five books and numerous articles.

Her involvement within her community at both the local and international level has garnered her multiple awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the Women of Distinction Award, the Alberta Catholic School Trustees Appreciation Award, and the Lieutenant Governor’s Leadership Award.

Dr. Miller joined the Calgary Catholic School District in March, 2007 and has successfully built an organizational culture of high standards, collaboration, transparency, accountability, and shared responsibility. She has established excellent working relationships with employees and union leaders and has built organizational capacity and commitment.

She is very active in the broader community serving on two provincial steering committees: Alberta Education’s Steering Committee to Establish a Strategic Framework with China, and Alberta Education’s Research Steering Committee. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Calgary Educational Partnerships Foundation, and the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation. She is on the Board of Governors for St. Mary’s University College and is a Director for United Way’s Upstart, Champions of Children and Youth initiative.

Dr. Miller began her role as United Way of Calgary and Area’s President and CEO on March 2, 2012.
