Methodology

Over the course of several months in 2010, United Way used a mixed-methods research approach to better understand the lived experiences, challenges and opportunities faced by vulnerable youth as they transition to adulthood. The research design incorporated several components, including: reviews of existing literature and data, focus group discussions with 70 vulnerable youth connected with youth-serving agencies and a survey of over 400 vulnerable youth from across low-income neighbourhoods in Calgary.

Qualitative data was collected in July 2010 and quantitative data collected between late July and early August 2010.  The data was subjected to separate analytical processes and, subsequently, data and findings were integrated into a single framework during the interpretation phase of the research process, over the fall of 2010.

Reseach Framework

The key research questions were identified as follows:

  • To articulate the challenges and opportunities associated with the transition to adulthood for vulnerable youth in Calgary.
  • To understand the impact of this transition on the well-being of youth, their families and the community.
  • To understand how United Way can better respond to support our youth and the staff/agencies who work with them.
