Upstart

Several years ago, United Way began asking: How can we make Calgary a better place for ALL children? The answers were diverse, but shared a common theme: by working together.

In response to the community, United Way founded The Calgary Children’s Initiative (now Upstart) in 2000 to bring together people from throughout the community for the benefit of Calgary’s children. From the beginning, Upstart’s mission has been big, bold, creative and collaborative. Like children themselves, Upstart has unlimited potential. And its making positive changes for every kid in Calgary!

Today, Upstart works with 70 agencies and organizations, investing in research, long-term planning and action for children and youth. This innovative initiative is building a community where every child and youth will:

  • Have a positive start in life
  • Be cared for and safe
  • Be ready for and experiences success in school
  • Practice healthy behaviours
  • Be successful in their transition to adulthood.

Looking ahead, Upstart will focus on:

Early Childhood Development - Laying the groundwork for a framework that supports child development during the critical early years.
Critical hours - Offering kids meaningful connections and activities during the hours when not in school.
