Two strong hands clench a rope while pulling a plane

Here are some tips and tricks to help you fundraise for your Plane Pull team!

1. Set your goal high

The minimum fundraising goal for a team is $1,200, but the sky’s the limit for how much your team can raise! Just fundraising the minimum $1,200 means our partners are able to feed 1,000 people a nutritious hot meal. Imagine what $2,400 or $3,600 could do – see your impact here! Push the limit, set a fundraising goal for your team, and talk about it!

2. Lead by example

Before asking your peers, make your own donation! Once your friends, family, and colleagues see your commitment to the cause, they will be more inspired to support you.

3. Spread the word!

Let your friends, family, and peers know you are involved in Plane Pull, and give them the opportunity to donate. Easy ways to do this include forwarding your team’s link, sharing information in your company’s newsletter, posting on social media (see some sample posts here), or sending a friendly email.

4. Make it personal

Share why you’re pulling! By participating in Plane Pull, you are doing local good and helping to create a resilient and caring community where everyone thrives. Take a look into United Way of Calgary and Area’s work, and share why this cause is important to you!

5. Start a friendly competition

Your team will be at its best when you are all working together – but adding a bit of competition to the mix never hurts. Challenge each other by setting individual fundraising and see who’s the first to meet or exceed their goal is. Keep your eyes on the prize – this year’s Plane Pull has some amazing prizes!

6. Offer a corporate match

Does your workplace have a corporate match for local causes? Ask around to see! It’s a great way to double your impact, and helps others to support you by knowing their contribution will be doubled!

7. Host an event

Bring together family and friends for a fun event to help raise money! Here are some examples:

  • Games night: Get your friends and family together for a fun night of board games, bingo, or trivia. Host the event at home and charge each player a set fee to participate.
  • Lunch time walks: Organize a lunch hour walking club and invite all colleagues to join the team in return for a small donation.
  • Bottle Drive: Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to collect their bottles leading up to Plane Pull and donate the money from returning them.
  • Yard Sale: Summer is a perfect time to collect items from your house and host a good old-fashioned yard sale!

8. Follow-up

If you haven’t received a response from someone you’ve asked for a donation, be sure to follow-up. Make a phone call, or send a quick note to make sure they haven’t forgotten your request. Once someone makes a donation, remember to thank them personally! Use United Way’s impact calculator to share how their gift is making a difference in the community.

Team registration

When can I register?

Registration opens June 5, 2018.

How can I register a team?

  1. Visit the 2018 Plane Pull registration page to sign up a team!
  2. Assign a team captain, and form your team. Every team can sign up to 20 members, but only 15 people can pull the plane and you need at least four female members pulling. Participants don’t all have to be from your workplace; feel free to invite spouses and friends to join as well. Please see team member requirements for more details.
  3. Once you’ve signed up, let the fundraising begin! Share your team’s online fundraising page and see our fundraising tips to get started.

What are team member requirements to sign up?

All team members must sign up using their full legal name as shown on a valid (non-expired) government issued photo ID. As Plane Pull takes place on airport property, team members will need to provide their ID showing their sign-up name on the day of the event to enter the tarmac and participate. Team members must be 18 years or older, and acknowledge the online waiver when registering in order to participate.

What if my team has fewer than 15 members?

All Plane Pull teams must have 15 members, which include at least four females, to participate. As it is important that we follow airport security rules, all members entering the tarmac must be registered prior to the event. We recommend registering more than 15 team members (maximum 20) to make sure your team has extras in case a team member is unable to attend.

If team members are unable to attend at the last minute, we also have United Way and UPS staff and volunteers on site that are approved to be on the tarmac and can join your team to make sure you have 15 people pulling that plane!

How many teams can my company register?

Since we have a limited time in the day, and we want to make sure as many of our community partners get their chance at tugging the plane, we ask that there is a maximum of two teams per company.

Can children participate?

Plane Pull is a family-friendly event with lots of fun activities available off the tarmac!

On the tarmac, Kids Pull is available during the lunch hour for children between the ages of 7 to 17. We encourage you to sign up your child prior to the event, but registration will also be available on site until 11 a.m. A waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian for children to participate.

For the larger Plane Pull competition, team members must be 18 years or older, and acknowledge the online waiver when registering to participate.

How do I correct someone's information on the registration page?

If a team member’s personal information is incorrect on Giveffect, please contact us and we will assist you in updating the information.

Fundraising

Is there a registration fee to participate?

No. However, all teams must raise a minimum of $1,200 to participate in the event.

How much does each team need to fundraise?

The minimum fundraising goal for a team is $1,200, but the sky’s the limit – literally! See the community impact of $1,200 or more here.

What if my team does not raise the minimum $1,200?

All teams must raise a minimum of $1,200 to participate in the event. We have some tips and tricks to get you to $1,200 and beyond. If your team is having trouble raising the minimum, please reach out United Way prior to the event at .

How do I enter a cash donation?

Please enter all cash donations through the online system. If your team has cash donations, we are happy to collect these at the donation table on September 16. To stay competitive online, please let us know the total cash dollars raised, and we will enter the amount onto your fundraising page from the back end! You can reach us at .

Where do Plane Pull donations go?

By participating in Plane Pull, you are doing local good and helping to create a resilient and caring community where everyone thrives. Funds raised by a Plane Pull company team will go toward your company’s overall United Way workplace campaign. All donations support United Way of Calgary and Area, and stay 100% local, improving lives right here in your community. To learn more about our work, visit calgaryunitedway.org/impact.

Event Day

Where and when is the event?

The 2018 Plane Pull will take place on Sunday, September 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UPS Customer Centre – 22 Aero Drive NE.

When will we know the time our team is pulling?

The pulling schedule will be posted one week before the event on the Plane Pull webpage under team resources. A reminder will be sent out to team captains once the schedule is posted. The below times are estimates, and may change.

  • 9 a.m. – doors open

When should I arrive at the event?

All participants must arrive at least 30 minutes before their team’s scheduled pull time. We encourage pullers to invite friends and family to cheer you on, enjoy great food and local entertainment.

  3. Plane Pull is an outdoor event. Please dress for the weather – hats and sunscreen are always a good idea. In the case of extreme weather such as thundershowers, the event may be postponed. We will update team captains and pullers as early as possible if that is the case.
  4. Bring your family and friends to cheer you on and have fun!

What safety precautions do I need to consider for Plane Pull?

Safety is taken seriously at Plane Pull. For proper pulling PPE, please wear closed toe shoes with good grip, and consider wearing clothing you can easily move in. You may want some extra grip holding onto the rope, so gloves will be available on site, or feel free to bring your own. To pull a 200,000 pound plane, you also need to get your muscles warmed up; please make sure to stretch before your team’s pull time.

Can pets come to the event?

No. As this event takes place in an airport area, pets are not allowed at the event.

Is there parking available?

Yes! Parking is available across the street from the event site. Please follow the Plane Pull signs day of to find a parking spot upon arrival.
