Calgary AfterSchool provides a variety of high-quality, supervised, and fun activities for children and youth aged 6 to 16 years between 3 and 6 p.m. on school days. As a partnership between the City of Calgary and United Way's UpStart initiative, these programs provide a place for kids to go after school and before their parents are home.
This summary report shows the findings from a comprehensive four-year evaluation of Calgary AfterSchool. The development of a city-wide network of high-quality after-school programming for children and youth was a groundbreaking approach.
Calgary AfterSchool programs are provided by The City of Calgary, Recreation; The City of Calgary, Community & Neighbourhood Services Area Offices; and non-profit organizations funded through The City of Calgary Family & Community Support Services.
In the four years since Calgary AfterSchool was officially launched, 20,930 registrations were recorded for 16,747 individual children and youth. By 2012/13, more than 108 individual programs, often at multiple locations, were offered over the course of the year.
