Karen Young to join United Way as new Vice President

A portrait of Karen YoungUnited Way of Calgary and Area is proud to announce that Karen Young is joining the organization as Vice President/Chief Operating Officer commencing June 16, 2014. Karen will be moving from her current position as Director of Community and Neigbourhood Services for The City of Calgary, where she was known as a strategist and a community builder.   Karen is an award-winning visionary leader and high-performing director with a 26 year successful track record with The City of Calgary, where she led change management, strategic planning and policy, partnership management, funding and grant programs, financial administration, community relations and program development initiatives at all levels.

Karen brings a wealth of experience in engaging citizens, communities, businesses and governments in building a great city for everyone. In her current role at the City, Karen has worked closely with United Way on projects including the Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative, Calgary Afterschool and the Calgary Local Immigration Partnership. Through her involvement in these projects, she developed an appreciation for the values and work of United Way.

Karen has been active in the local community serving on the Calgary Housing Company Board of Directors, Calgary TELUS Convention Centre Board of Directors, Trustee of the Burns Memorial Fund, Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative Stewardship Group, Calgary Local Immigration Partnership Council and the Calgary Economic Development Advisory Group. 

Karen has a Master’s Certificate in Municipal Leadership from the Schulich School of Business (York University). She also has a Bachelor of General Studies in Leisure, Recreation and Tourism from the University of Calgary.

Karen believes in the importance of accelerating change by being intentional through the development of a clear vision and outcomes that have community impact. She is warm and compassionate, has high standards and a collaborative nature.  She is action-oriented and believes in being transparent and accountable to the community. 

Karen enjoys leading a healthy active lifestyle and spending quality time with her family and friends and is really looking forward to working with the high performing team at the United Way.
