February 25th, 2011 - Calgary, AB - United Way of Calgary and Area Board Chair, Scott Thon, announced today that President and CEO Ruth Ramsden-Wood has stated her plans for retirement from United Way, effective December 2011.
Ruth Ramsden-Wood has served as President and CEO of United Way since 1997. During her tenure as President, United Way has grown to become a leading community-based organization that has been able to work collaboratively with other organizations and sectors to make a positive long-term impact in the communities of Calgary.
“After 13 years of great leadership, Ruth is looking forward to a change of pace, a chance to enjoy some travels and the time to take up other interests,” commented Thon. “True to form, she is very committed to ensuring her timing creates a smooth transition as she and her team continues to engage and mobilize the community in solving critical social issues in our city.”
In announcing her retirement to United Way staff and volunteers, Ruth Ramdsen-Wood stated, “I have been completely energized and committed by the role United Way plays in our community to research and monitor social issues, to build public understanding and knowledge, to coordinate service delivery in sectors, to convene organizations in the community to fill gaps and to jointly develop new ways of working together in our community to build lasting solutions.”
For Ruth, it is the staff, volunteers and donors whose skills, expertise and passion for building a stronger and more vibrant city, that have made these past few years at United Way so enjoyable.
“I am tremendously enriched by the learning I have gained, the relationships I have developed and the knowledge I have of our community and the fabulous people who live in it,” said Ramsden-Wood.
The United Way Board of Directors will commence its process to fill the Executive leadership role and ensure a timely transition aligned with Ruth’s planned departure at year’s end. “On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I thank Ruth for her passion, energy, commitment, creativity and ability to work and inspire others to personally be part of making this city great for everyone,” concluded Thon.
